I have also pared the reading back for the last couple of weeks. See the syllabus with resources for details.

There were a lot of questions about Shia and Sunni Islam in the last section, which is timely because the Shiites are about to celebrate Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hussein.

An important element to some Shiites is an element of millenialism, that is that there will be an apocalypse when Muhammad al-Mahdi, the 12th Imam, comes out of occulsion. Yesterday, and important battle took place in Najaf. The Washington Post is reporting that the insurgents were from a Shiite splinter group hoping to assasinate Imam al-Sistani, the leader of the Iraqi Shiite community, to spark the reappearance of the 12th Imam and the end of times.

The attack failed, but had it succeeded, it is likely that it would provoke a bloodbath, one much worse than the civil war prompted by the destruction of the Al-Askari Mosque in February 2006. The Al-Askari Mosque is the burial site of the 11th and 12th Imams and is the site of a shrine to al-Mahdi.
