Also, I am not "that" Brian Campbell. If you are looking for Brian Campbell the Sabres player, look here. I think it would be both cool and wierd if we could meet - he was playing for the Rochester Americans while I was getting my Ph.D. there, so our lives seem to have some kind of bizzare parallel track. He has since been traded to San Jose, so at least there are fewer of us in Buffalo now.

I recently completed my Ph.D. in History at the University of Rochester examining historical presevation in the former German Democratic Republic.. My dissertation title is Rising from the Ruins, Turning to the Past: Historical Preservation in the German Democratic Republic. This poster, from the German Propaganda Archive at Calvin College, illustrates one of the GDR's basic problems with identities. The worker in the picture isn't a German, and he doesn't have a local identity based on his Heimat or homeland. Instead he is supposed to pledge his allegiance to "his state." My dissertation examines historical preservation in the framework of national and local identity and how East German party and state officials approached the question, how does one build socialism in a landscape dominated by the religious church, the feudal palace and the bourgoise city hall?

I currently reside in Buffalo with my wife and am currently teaching American history at Niagara University and Rochester Institute of Technology. I grew up in Rochester, New York and am a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Virginia. I studied for a year at the Wilhelms-Westfälische Universität in Münster, Germany and taught English at the Humanitarian Gymnasium 11 in Saint Petersburg Russia. I am a life-long Buffalo Bills fan and enjoy listening to music and hiking in my spare time.
